Google is leveraging generative AI to enhance its search experience, introducing expanded AI Overviews and teasing a new AI agent project. At its annual I/O event, Google revealed that the AI Overviews feature, powered by the Gemini model, generates natural-sounding answers to user queries. Initially piloted in the U.K., this feature is now available to all U.S. users, with a global rollout planned.
AI Overviews can handle complex, multi-layered queries, offering users comprehensive answers and relevant links, simplifying the search process. Google CEO Sundar Pichai noted that AI Overviews have increased search usage and generated billions of responses.
Additionally, Google Photos now uses the Gemini model for advanced search capabilities. The Ask Photos feature allows users to search their photo library with natural language queries, providing detailed text responses.
Google is also working on Project Astra, a universal AI agent developed by Google DeepMind, which aims to perform multiple tasks as an assistant tool.
